Akril
faqs
Is Akril cost effective when compared with painted glass?
YES. About 40% more cost effective in price than painted hardened (safety) glass– but even more so when compared in terms of reduced lead times, ready availability and ease of fabrication and installation which means there is more project control on site than with a glass alternative.

Can Akril be used behind cook tops?
NO. Heat sources greater than 100° Celsius will cause distortion.
Whilst Akril has a higher heat resistance than most polymers, it is not recommended for applications directly behind cook tops. Akril can be used in any vertical situation where coming into contact with direct radiated heat isn’t a consideration.

Can Akril be used as a whiteboard?
Yes; though with all whiteboards care must be taken to use appropriate whiteboard markers and to not leave ink on the board for extended periods. We recommend Stephens brand Whiteboard markers for use with Akril Whiteboards.
If the whiteboard marker causes ghosting or a permanent marker is accidently used; methylated spirits or Isopropyl Alcohol will remove the ink. Always rinse of the Akril Whiteboard with warm water following the use of these cleaners

What happens if Akril is scratched?
Most surface scratches can be polished out of the gloss Akril range by hand with a micro-polish such as Brasso on a clean rag.
Deeper scratches can be removed and the panel restored to its original lustre and finish. Details of how to repair Akril can be found at Technical Information/ Repair & Maintenance click here.

Will abrasives scratch Akril?
YES, if applied vigorously. This level of abrasion is useually restored with a micro-polish such as Brasso and a clean rag. For deeper scratches see here click here.

Can I backlight Akril?
Akril has a dense colour applied to one surface. Strong back-lighting may exaggerate any density variations; especially Akril gloss panel. Akril Frost panel has a surface that further diffuses light transmission, mitigating the above effect and has been used successfully for ambient lighting boxes. Please consult an Aquaknight Industries representative before purchasing and installation.

How is Akril environmentally friendly?
Akril requires far less energy to manufacture and process than equivalent glass product, making its carbon footprint far smaller. Akril has also been awarded a green star rating by The Good Environmental Choice of Australia. Akril can be recycled under recyclable plastic number 7.

Are there any cleaning products I should avoid?
Yes, there are some chemicals found in cleaning products that may affect Akril. These include - Acetone, Ethyl acetate, Amyl alcohol, Amyl acetate, Benzene/toluene/xylene, Butyl alcohol, Cellusolve, Chloroform, Cresols/phenols, Chlorinated solvents/ halogenated solvents, Methyl alcohol, Sulphuric acid (10%)/dilute acids, MEK methyl ethyl ketone (PVC pipe glue).

Can Akril be used outside?
While Akril has a 10-year UV warranty, it is not recommended for exterior applications in which it is directly exposed to the weather. It is suitable for covered and protected areas such as undercover patios, barbecue’s, soffit’s etc .

Are there any special tools or skills required when working with Akril on site?
NO. Akril is lightweight, durable and can be cut, shaped and polished reliably using the tools normally found on site without chipping, splintering or cracking.
Guidelines for cutting geometry’s, feeds and speeds can be found at Technical Information/ Machining of Akril Panels section click here.

Are special adhesives required?
NO. Most supported vertical installations are achieved with neutral glazing silicon such as V60. Acetic cure silicones and adhesives are not recommended as it is very likely to bleed through and damage the finished panel. For more detailed information see Technical section click here.

What colours and finishes are available?
There are 10 standard designer colours in the Akril range – from the bold and striking though to the quieter, neutral colours. These colours are available in both the lustrous Akril gloss range and the more muted Akril frost matt range.
